Introductory racing program for ages 8-14

           

The Optimist is a 7’9” long, single-handed sailing pram, with a sprit rig. The Optimist is the biggest

youth racing class in the world.

Schedule:

The program meets on the following Sunday afternoons from 1 to 4 pm:

September:12,19,26

October: 3,10,17,24,31

November: 7,14

The program meets rain or shine

Fees:

USSCMC Member Fees:

Fall 2021: $400 due before the first session on Sunday, September 12, 2021 

USSCMC Family Membership required to be active through November 2021

(member activation fee waived for new members)

USSCMC Non-Member Fees:

Fall 2021: $450 due before the first session on Sunday, September 12, 2021

Additional Details:

We have a limited number of registrations available (12 boats provided; 4 spots open for those who own their own Opti)

The program fee includes coaching at the Florida East Coast Youth Series Regattas.

PFD and a safety helmet are required. New sailors will receive a safety helmet.  

Sailors will have a chance to compete at the Florida Junior Olympic Sailing Festival hosted by the Sailing Center on December 4-5, 2021

 

 

 

Students should already know how to sail.  A minimum of 2 weeks of Summer Sailing Camp experience.

  • Minimum required skills in 8-10 kts of wind
    • Rig the boat
    • Launch the boat unassisted
    • Hold a point of sail
    • Capable of tacking and jibing
    • Capsize recovery
    • Bail the boat
    • Resume sailing
    • Return to the beach unassisted
