The Optimist is a 7’9” long, single-handed sailing pram, with a sprit rig. The Optimist is the biggest youth racing class in the world.

Schedule:

Coach led sessions held at the USSCMC

Sundays, 1-4pm on the following dates:

      September 15,22,29*

      October 6,13*20, 27

      November 3,10*,17,24

      December 1*,15*

      December 7-8 (Junior Olympic Sailing Festival at the USSCMC)

Dates marked with a * are part of the Florida East Coast Youth Series

 

Program Fee:

Space is limited to 12 USSCMC Optimist Prams. Privately owned Optis are welcome; same program fee applies.

$360/person (USSCMC Family Membership)

$410/person (non-member)

Program fee includes:

      Coaching for practices and East Coast Youth Series regattas

      Entry fee for ECYS regatta at the USSCMC (September 29)

     50% discount on entry fee to the Junior Olympic Sailing Festival

     Optimist pram for program dates and times

Prerequisites

Students should already know how to sail.  A minimum of 2 weeks of Summer Sailing Camp experience.

  • Minimum required skills in 8-10 kts of wind
    • Rig the boat
    • Launch the boat unassisted
    • Hold a point of sail
    • Capable of tacking and jibing
    • Capsize recovery
    • Bail the boat
    • Resume sailing
    • Return to the beach unassisted
