Beginners = Basic Class = Learning the ropes (knots & lines), beginner terminology, points of sail, rigging the boat, launching & landing, tacking, jibing, reading the wind, capsize recovery, getting out of irons, right-of-way rules

  • This Class may be completed in as little as one week, but more often requires 2-3 weeks to complete

After Basic Class = Intermediate Class= Upwind Sailing, Downwind Sailing, heavy air 15+ knots, mark roundings, proper tiller control, proper sail trim, man over board, scope capsize recovery, introduction to racing, racing rules

  • This Class may be completed in as little as one week, but more often requires 3-6 weeks to complete

Advanced = Advanced Class = Perfection and performance of skills and techniques.  Spinnaker sailing, sailing on a trapeze wire, racing techniques, sailing theory

  • This Class will last a lifetime.  When reaching the end of what camp has to offer, you will either start racing, buy a bigger boat, or start teaching others to sail.

REGISTRATION TIPS:

  • When selecting the class, know that the Camp Directors will properly place your child.  When in doubt choose the Basic Class for the age appropriate group. It is always easier emotionally on the student when we move them up to an intermediate group rather than move them down to a beginner group.
  • When ages overlap to different groups (7 year olds for Little Skippers or OPTIS) or (12 year olds for OPTIS or DINGHIES) base your decision on the child's physical size and maturity. Remember Little Skippers are half days and OPTIS are full days.
  • For registration purposes Intermediate & Advanced are group as one selection. We will provide them with the appropriate training.

GENERAL NOTES:

  • Windsurfing training will be available to all who express interest
  • Students bring their own lunch or purchase lunch from the Sailing Center for the week (no single day lunch option)
  • Little Skippers always go home for lunch.
  • Late Care is available as a paid option (by the week, not available by the day).
