First Sail

Sailing is the perfect activity for anyone who enjoys water sports and outdoor recreation. Sailing can be exciting or relaxing. You can compete in racing or take a leisurely sail with family and friends. Regardless of age, ability or limitation, sailing has something for everyone.

Our First Sail Introductory Class offers an overview of sailing and introduces you to options available on how to learn to sail. This is an adult class, so grab your friends and try something new!   Teens may attend when parent/guardian is also participating.

The class is just over 2 hours in length, and weather permitting, includes a combination of on the water and "chalk talk" instruction. The cost is $25 per person and you are encouraged to dress for the water and wear closed-toe shoes. It's also a good idea to bring a beach towel, hat, sunglasses, plenty of sunscreen, and a water bottle.

What boat do we learn to sail?

The Hobie Wave is perfect for learning to sail or for brushing up on your sailing skills. Our Adult Learn to Sail Course was designed to teach adults how to sail through groups lessons or private lessons, depending on preffered style of learning.

Private Sailing Lessons:

We offer private lessons and will schedule instruction on dates and times suitable for you.  Lessons may be scheduled by appointment during regular hours of operations: Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am to 6pm. Individual goals will determine the number of lessons. Typically, lessons are scheduled in 2 and 3-hour blocks of time. 

As you prepare for your lesson, please be sure to bring the following with you to your lesson at the Sailing Center:

Bathing suit and beach towel

Closed-toe, non-slip boat, water shoes with white soles (dark soles leave marks on the boats.) No flip-flops or spongy crocs as secure footing on the boat is essential.

Hat and sunglasses


A change of clothing should you want to go home in dry clothes in the event of rain or possible capsize drill.

Sailing Lesson Fees:

2-hour minimum required

$45/hour for members
$60/hour for non-members
$20/hour for additional person in the same boat

Want to learn with a friend or family member? The cost is $20 additional per person, per hour.

Professional coaching for privates lessons s the hourly rate plus the cost of a chartering a boat.

Adult Sailing: Sunday, Sailing & Sipping     2 Spots Available
The USSCMC Adult Sailing is a 6-week course. This weekly group will focus on group and individual skill development, making new friends, taking on new challenges, and spending as much time on the water as possible. The prerequisite for this program is the USSCMC Adult Learn to Sail course or previous sailing experience. Participants must be 21 years of age or older to register.

Depending on conditions, we will be sailing: Flying Scots, Hobies, 420s, FJs, Lasers

We will try to focus on individual goals from relaxed cruising to course racing.
