Join our Volunteers
The USSCMC welcomes our growing group of volunteers to the Center! One talented group of volunteers has recently concluded a 6-month process to completely restore a Flying Scot to "like new" condition. Volunteers included: Tony Downsbrough, Jack Frick, Richard Lusk, Randy Alford, Steve Tate, John Mann, Garrett Alford and George Nitschke along with the donated professional help of Danny Cabrera of Danny's Boat Restoration. "The Volunteer" is the newly-christened boat's name. She is dedicated to ALL of YOU who volunteer your time and resources to make the USSCMC such a special place. Thank you for all you do!
Meet Our Volunteers: The Restoration Team
• Richard Lusk – As a member of the USSCMC, Richard brings professional carpentry and general construction supervisory skills to the the team. Richard has been the Lead Coordinator of the boat restoration project. He has lived in Stuart for 10 years and is the father of two. His son Jack enjoys sailing and is part of the Jensen Beach High School team and his daughter is an NCAA diver at UNM. Richard loves the process of continually learning the skills of restoration. He is an adult advisor for Sea Scouts Ship 801. Richard has also replaced doors and installed kitchen cabinets for us this past summer.
• Tony Downsbrough - Tony retired in August, 2007 from the U.S. Postal Service. Upon retirement, he and his wife of 22 years relocated from Las Vegas to Jensen Beach. Tony grew up sailing in Cape Cod. He joined the USSCMC in March, 2009 and has been involved in helping many of our community sailing programs ever since. If there is an opportunity to help at the Sailing Center you can bet that Tony will be there for us.
• Jack Frick - Jack is a Florida native who grew up in Daytona. In 2006 he retired from FPL, and in 2007 joined the Sailing Center as a member. Jack started sailing when he got out of the Army in 1961 when he bought a small boat with a friend and sailed around the San Diego Harbor. In addition to sailing, Jack is a retired flight instructor. He and his wife Shirley have been married for 34 years and live in Stuart. Jack was a dedicated force in completing the Flying Scot. Jack, “Enjoys keeping busy and enjoys working with the team.”
• Steve Tate - Steve retired in August, 2009 as Vice President of a Civil Engineering firm in North Carolina. Steve started sailing seriously in 1968. He has raced almost every size boat from Sunfish to 44’ Catalina. He currently owns a 22‘ Catalina and is working on his six pack captain’s license. Upon his retirement Steve immediately sought out the Sailing Center as a place to volunteer and share his passion for sailing. Steve has taught “Intro to Racing” classes at the Center and is a dedicated force of the Restoration Team. Steve says he, “enjoys learning and applying his new skills” to his own boat and he really enjoys the friendships he has developed with the Restoration Team.
